Karnali International Film Festival and the Power of Cinema Tourism
The Karnali International Film Festival (KIFF) has been giving increasing priority to the concept of Cinema Tourism, recognizing the powerful connection between filmmaking, tourism, culture, and destination promotion.
Cinema has the unique ability to introduce places to audiences far beyond their geographical boundaries. A landscape featured in a film can become a destination; a village can become a story; and a culture showcased on screen can inspire audiences to experience it in person. Recognizing this potential, KIFF has been consistently raising the voice for the development and promotion of cinema tourism in Nepal.
The festival has been encouraging actors, filmmakers, directors, producers, writers, and other members of the film industry to speak, write, create content, and actively participate in campaigns promoting the concept of cinema tourism. KIFF believes that the collective voice of Nepal’s creative community can play a significant role in establishing cinema tourism as an important component of the country’s tourism strategy.
Promoting Karnali Through Cinema
Karnali Province is home to extraordinary natural landscapes, ancient civilizations, diverse cultures, indigenous traditions, sacred sites, mountains, lakes, rivers, and countless stories that remain largely unexplored by international audiences.
Among its most iconic destinations is Rara Lake, alongside numerous cultural and natural attractions across the province. Yet Karnali’s immense tourism potential remains underdeveloped and underrepresented on the global tourism map.
KIFF has therefore been working through film screenings, film tourism dialogues, location promotion, cultural programs, discussions, campaigns, and international engagement to highlight Karnali as a destination for filmmakers, tourists, and storytellers.
The festival’s approach goes beyond simply showcasing beautiful locations. It seeks to establish Karnali as a living cinematic destination, where filmmakers can discover authentic stories, unique landscapes, cultural heritage, and extraordinary locations for future productions.
Calling on the Film Industry
KIFF continues to call upon Nepal’s film fraternity to take ownership of the cinema tourism movement.
Actors can become ambassadors for destinations.
Filmmakers can discover and showcase new locations.
Writers can tell the stories of communities and cultures.
Producers can bring productions to unexplored destinations.
And audiences can become travelers inspired by what they see on screen.
This collective effort can create a powerful cycle:
Film → Destination Awareness → Tourism → Local Economy → Cultural Preservation → Sustainable Development.
For KIFF, cinema tourism is therefore not simply about promoting locations for filming. It is about connecting storytelling with tourism, creating economic opportunities for local communities, preserving cultural heritage, and presenting Nepal—particularly Karnali—to the world through the universal language of cinema.
With its continued focus on Film, Tourism, and Climate Change, the Karnali International Film Festival is committed to strengthening this movement and positioning Karnali as a distinctive destination on the international cinema and tourism map.
Karnali has stories to tell, landscapes to discover, and cultures to experience. Cinema can be the bridge that connects them with the world.
